HI I was wondering if anyone had done some work in there boot to make it look nicer. I'm thinking about it but not sure where to start. Anyone with pictures would greatly help me thanks.

aj, when i first purchased my vn i brought a vr/vs boot carpet which makes it look very near inside and it also covers the spare really well, but now that i've got the time i'm almost finished building a custom sub box which sits flush with the back seat and comes back to just after where the wheel well starts. it takes up most of the boot, but it houses 3 subs. im still using the spare wheel cover to hide the gap and on the drivers side thats where i've mounted the amp.
If i knew how 2 post pics i'd show some progress ones. |

| Depends on what you're wanting to do with your boot. If you're looking towards a sound system, then a false floor would be a good start. |

That sounds like a great setup James i would love to see some pictures if you can post them. I'm not really looking at putting a soound system in. I'm really looking to make the boot look a lot cleaner. I want to cut of the spare wheel area and maybe the opposite side as well to store some spare stuff. I have had thoughts of putting leather in it to really make it look neat but not sure.

| mate you can get some cardboard and make stencils of the bits you want to block off then use them to cut some chipboard or plywood to fit in then cut off the top sections and put some hinges on and put em back together, fit em in and get some latches from the hardware store, and attach em to wherever you want and voila |

Whatever you do, make sure that the boot is waterproof if you're going to use wood. Most VN boots leak pretty badly.
Chipboard and water isn't a good combo. |

| you could ofcourse use sheet metal but that ould be alot harder.... I'd get rid of the leaks if any and just carpet the chip board |

I'm interested in undertaking a similar project with the Calais. I got as far as a cardboard mock up before I got sidetracked searching for a mechanical gremlin (sorted now... damn ignition module and coil- what a prick of a job that was!).
My advice would be to search the net for ideas and download any pictures that take your eye. Then sketch out what you want to do on a piece of paper and get to test fitting with some cardboard. When you strip the boot of existing carpet etc. Take note of any problem areas that need fixing as your highest priority - these guys speak the truth! Thats pretty much the preliminaries done and then its just a matter of getting your materials and making sure you pay a hell of a lot of attention to detail when it comes to measurements etc (make sure you can shut the boot!!). Any short cuts taken are going to stand out like dog's balls and if you want to have a crack at a project like this I guess you want a good result.
For materials, I was going to use MDF (wasn't sure on thickness at the time) and hit up Spotlight to view their selection of felts, carpet like thingos and leather look materials- obviously what you use depends on how much traffic the boot will get. As another tip- you are probably aware of the designs people do with hoodlinings and don't forget you can apply the exact same principle to your custom boot with a couple of modifications depending on material and once again traffic. Those $2 yoga mats can the MDF a bit more body and with beveled edges can look amazing! Plus you can use some of the yoga mat to get rid of the annoying boot garnish and number plate rattle associated with big sound system VNs!
I've said enough for now but any other questions post them here and I'll see if I can offer any advice. Like I said- I'm only in the planning stages myself but maybe we can help each other out! |

I've had a crack at the mock up with cardboard but still messing around with what i want in the final. Stil not sure about the material either. Thanks for your reply |

Unfortunately no pics in progress as there hasn't been a whole lot of progress! Bascically, all I am looking at doing is raising the floor and making symetrical hinged boxes on each side to house the spare on one side and some tools and basic parts on the other. I'm not sure whether to mount the existing single 12inch sub or upgrade and grab a pair.
I'll be following this thread with interest though. |

HI.
Progress on the boot is coming along slowly but surely. I have run into a couple of issues with some parts not being easy to cover but i have completed probably 3/4 of the wood work so its coming along good. I will post pictures when i get around to putting new batteries in my camera. Hope to see some of your boot soon too.
PS: Does anyone know of any calais interior for sale. |

There is an update on my progress.
I will post more pictures as i do more or if you have a request for a certain picture.

Looking good. Looks similar to what I plan on doing, except, I will have to have BOTH sides just run straight back to the rear of the car so I can fit the computer in behind it on the drivers side ;)
How many subs you going to throw in there? |

What computer do you have to put in the boot????
I'm not going to put any subs in the boot i dont really listen to the kind of music that requires one.
If anyone is interested i just put a picture of my car on my ride area. |

| Still not sure on the exact specs, but it's going to be a full computer (I'm not going to stuff around with the laptop like I thought I was going to), it's going to have balls though. And as well as the computer there's all the networking gear, and the fans to keep it all cool, and the inverter to power a whole stack of stuff...it's going to take up a lot of room ;) Wireless keyboard and mouse, and about 300gb of hard-drive space. Wired network ports to each of the seats, as well as wireless...I'm a geek. |

HI Everyone.
Just thought i would give you an update and see how everyone else was going. Hey james did you find the forum so you post your pictures i would love to see them. Has anyone else started work on their boots yet!!!!
Well mine is coming along really well i think. I've finished all the wood and i've covered it in thin foam and put the underly on the bottom. I think i'll just have to wait a little bit before the carpet goes in. Still undecided on exact colors but i will tell you i'm planing something a little bit different.

Thanks for those comments. Sorry about the pics saying 2001 i've been lazy and haven't been bothered changing the date. These are the latest pictures of the boot. I'll be sure to update them as soon as something new happens. Does anyone else have any pictures of their boot???? There is alot of people looking at this forum feel free to leave pictures of your boot or make comments. |
