Sup Guys, I've been looking at putting a few basic engine mods into my car, the ones I'm going after at the moment is a cold air intake, does anyone know any reccomended brand thats better/more reliable than others?
Also, looking at a gain intake mod as well, are these things worth it? I mean do they actually work?
Any info on best engine mods to start off with would be much appreciated.

Genuine holden VS super charged cold air intake seems to be the one to go for. There are a few threads that make mention of this. It is a very simple and affordable mod. Around $50-$80 i think. As for the gain intake mod i dont recall ever hearing of such a thing. Where did you hear about it?? |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

One of my mates mentioned the words to me, and I thought I'd look it up. Problem is, I can only find it on eBay, which makes me think its a load of ****. ' Once this mod is fitted and the ECU reprogrammed, allowing your ECU to believe that it is always cold outside. The ECU then adjusts the timing and air/fuel ratio accordingly which boosts your cars power' Like I said, I think its a load of ****, but wanted to check. |

Ye si have heard of it now that you say that. From what i have heard it gives you bad fuel ecconomy and no power gain. So no i would not recommend it. If you search the forums i believe you will find a discussion on this topic. |

ok, glad I checked first lol. Apart from air filter, any other semi-cheap mods to make my car run better? |

lowered springs, memcal exhaust throttle body and shift kit, a bit more expensive but worth it, would be a vl turbo diff (1500 or so) |
Cheers, Nodg. |

Lowered springs make a car run better?
Are we talking for the V6 or the V8? Theres heaps of quick easy tricks on here for the six, I can't think of any quick cheap tricks for the 8- it kinda depends on what you call cheap.
Probably the best, cheap performance gain you can get is making sure everything is working to the best possible capability. Make sure throttle cable is operable to opening the throttle body 100%, make sure the kick down cable is correctly adjusted, whack in a new set of high quality plugs and change the leads, CAI and high quality filter is a common one, throw in some fresh engine oil and a new filter, same with the trans- its often overlooked and surprising what a difference a service makes- I'm pretty sure the diff is another one. Check belt deflection to make sure that the belts on the front are all happy to be there and doing what they are meant to do. I'm sure others will elaborate on other areas to look for.
As for the CAI- I strongly recommend the factory Holden piece as previously mentioned. Its cheap and does exactly what it says on the tin! I'm pretty sure that the SS inductions items are quite expensive, especially when looking at bang for your buck so I'd personally stay away but I haven't actually had one so this is only based on my own research and not my own experiences. I'd assume that you'd be better off with the cheaper CAI and better filter than the more expensive intake and a crusty piece of **** filter.
After that, I guess we start looking at more expensive mods.
I'm all for making things breathe better and a good exhaust would benefit- a well sorted exhaust system will give power and noise and we all love that stuff. Just make sure its a FULL system or you aren't going to get the full effect. This means headers, cat(s?), muffler(s?). It does all add up. Talk to a couple of exhaust shops about what you want to achieve, what you want to spend and what they recommend. Post the information on here and we will let you know if they are pissing in your pocket or not.
You can take the cheaper options available and only upgrade certain parts which is cool if you are on a budget (aren't we all!!) but remember that it is cheaper for a reason.
Next on my personal agenda would be to make the most of what you've got. I'm currently researching transmission and diff upgrades to make the most of a cammed 5litre and from what I'm hearing a lot of good can come of it. You can get a shift kit and upgraded servo for under a hundred dollars for the pair and if you can get them bolted up yourself its a cheap thing to do giving much firmer and quicker shifts. Obviously the trans needs to be in fair condition or this will only bring about its demise much quicker. If you've got the manual this obviously isn't a concern! Perhaps the biggest gains in this area are going to be the diff gears- I'm looking at 3.7s as a mate has some fitted up to his VP SS and claimed that in the seat of the pants dyno readings this was more noticable than the group A cam... Bang for buck that makes it a clear winner.
Sorry for the long post, and a lot of it probably isn't relevant but use what you can. If you've got any questions ask and if anyones got any corrections please make them! |
