Best thing to do would be to get a hold of a Max ellery's manual which has a complete procedure on disassembly and assembly. I am not sure if the gregory's manual does or not but have a look anyway.

What sort of special tool nodg?? When we rebuilt the diff in my brothers ute we didn't need anything out of the ordinary and i can't find any mention of it in the Max Ellery's manual either??

its a key that you can pick up from repco. belive it was the borg warners that needed the key to change the crown wheel. to what extent did you rebuilt te diff vnsvle?
Complete overhaul including new cones, seals and bearings. As far as i can remember all it was was a ring of bolts and then tapped it off the case with soft faced hammer
