Hi All i have vn v8 manual comodore. i have had the rear diff done recently. after the runn in period of the diff (where i was told not to do over 80kph) i did 100KPH and i now get tailsaft vibration.
now looking at tail shaft. the front UJ and the back UJ dont apear to be in line. back one seams to be about 20-30 deg out in refferance to the front UJ.
http://www.montinsin.com/bathurst/DSC00366.JPG http://www.montinsin.com/bathurst/DSC00369.JPG
when i complained to the diff place.. they said that it needs ballance... is this bull**** ?
so.. should the front UJ be in same allignment as back UJ ?
i called a ballencing service and they stated that the tailshaft. nothern diffs stated ballance was $280 they unfit and then refit. ballancing services stated it was $105 (if i bring shaft to them)
should be ballanced every time the UJ's are changed.. any thoughts ???

its called phasing, a tailshaft should be phased evrytime its taken apart but usually mechanics simply put a marking on the tailshaft before its taken apart so it can be assembled in exactly the same position....
So im guessing the vibration came after you went over 100?? chances are its a coincidence and may be the centre bearing has sh1t itself, i doubt you damaged the tailshaft or diff by going over 100 once or twice.
Is your car lowered? could be you need a adjustable panhard rod and never noticed the angle of the tailshaft until now..... |
Cheers, Nodg. |

also make sure teh bolts holding the tail shaft to the diff are tight. sometimes the mecahanics (and anyone working on cars) do forget to do a final tightening of these, although you would ntice it all teh time but ya never know |

sorry for the late rely. ive been busy with job interviews.
i dont believe that they would have pulled the tailsaft apart. there is no evedence that the have disasembeld the CV joint in the tail shaft. the CV joint dosnt look like it has been changed / messed with. i checked today that the clip hasnt come off and that they couldnt have accidently moved the back shaft with relation to the front shaft.
teh rear flange bolts to the diff were tight, and are again.
the tailsaft didnt vibrate before i had diff and UJ's done. i had driven the car for a month before getting the diff done.. it just used to wine like a pig...
im going to take the tailshaft assembly down to ballencing services in melbourne. they charge $99 +gst to ballance the tailshaft.
the diff is a LSD with was fully rebuilt. |

i think it might be the center main bearing too. I had the same problem with my vn rang the mechanic and he thought thats what it was and turned out the right. I think from memory it cost me about 20 bucks and haven't had a problem since. Mine was done about 3 years ago. My car is also lowered with the adjustable panhard rod. |

my car used to rub on the guard until i put the adjustable panhard rod in. my diff is missing half a tooth and it single's left and right and its starting to vibrate. it has been through hell and back. my tail shaft bolts come loose every now and then i need to buy locktight and new bolts. |

m8 u need to relax,,,,, even if he doesnt, who are you to b putting a foot up members butts for not ( replying in the allocated time) (if there is one? ) . Dont meen to sound snappy but I'm just curious as to y a member should feel pressured into replying in a certain amount of time ( to another member )??? Relax m8 we all put time and a bit of thought into our replys but that doesnt meen that they will be read or responded to!! |

also check the rear engin mount (if havent already)
also for $105 it wouldn't be a bad idea balancing the shaft (if cash aint a problem) but if i was to go with balancing the shaft i would replace the unis and center bearing |
