This one for all you audiophiles
I'm looking at upgrading the stereo a little and changing my current subwoofer set up from the single 12inch (Pioneer Dual Voice Coil- can't remember power rating) that has served well for a few years now to something with a little more oomph.
The question is whether I should be looking at a pair of 12s of a trio of 10s. Quality of sound is more valuable to me than pure volume but clarity whilst loud is quite important. Other speakers are 6.5inch three ways in the rear and 4inch two ways in the front.
The musical range is diverse to say the least (Simon and Garfunkle, Mudavayne, Gym Class Heroes, Fall Out Boy and Xzibit are the last 5 Cds to get a run).
If anyone can offer pros, cons and advice it would be very much appreciated.

well to start it depends on your wallet, with an infinate amount of money id go the trio of 10's they would give of a tad bit higher frequencies than the 12's although the cons of this is the amps you would need to run them and power cables, fuses and stuff, the 12's is what i would take for myself since i like the bass the things give off, and depends on what wattage the 10 inches are u may need a capacitor for the voltage drop(more power and less light dimming)
hope this helps :D |

I'll probably look at Jaycar amps for bang for buck and the capacitor is a play by ear thing. The car already has an upgraded alternator and Optima yellow top so its possible I'll get away without one. I'm at work today so I might do a bit of window shopping and see what I come up with.
I'll post the detailed, suggested system here. |

At the moment- primarily due to $$$- I'll be going Jaycar.
Due to the reponses I've been getting in regards to 3x10s and the associated amplification issues, I'll be going 2x 10s (Jaycar Profile CS2366 250wRMS) powered by the Jaycar 2x 150wRMS amp. In place of the third ten and the head scratching, I'll probably pick up the Jaycar 4x50wRMS amp to power the speakers front and rear. The existing rears will be up to it but I'll have to get in some new fronts.
I won't be skimping on terminals and wiring and I'd expect this to run me just over the $1000 mark for what most would consider a pretty basic upgrade.
The breakdown looks like:
10inch Profile Sub / Jaycar CS2366 / 250w RMS / $139 x 2 2x 150w RMS Precision Response Amp / Jaycar AA0424 / $249.95 Response Precision Kevlar Coaxials - 4" 2 Way / Jaycar CS2320/ $99.95 4x 50w RMS Precision Response Amp / Jaycar AA0422 / $199
The 4inch speakers were mainly chosen for power handling but the speakers and subs are subject to change depending on peoples advice and when I actually inspect and audition them personally.
Advice very much appreciated!

hey thought id write in wat i have in my car and sounds very very good well to my ears they do. Im running a pair of 4" pioneer in the front and 2 pairs of 6" pioneers in the back 1 pair is 230watts i think and the other is 160watts.
In the boot ive got 2 12" 1200watt pioneer subs in a custom box facing upwards. Also another 15" sub sitting where the diff is facing the front.
Now running all that ive got a sony mono block, pioneer mono block and last n but least a cadence 2 channel amp.
I dont get no power issues with it my battery neva goes flat even when i have it running at fulll blast for least an hour. The main thing is also it sounds very good.
Only down side of it is that my number plate n boot rattles real bad. Besdies that the sounding is nice and strong |

As nodg suggested- I've used a chopped up yoga mat that cost about $2 from some cheap shop. Cut it size and place it behind the center boot garnish and the number plate itself. Works a treat. |

im an alpine man myself but ive seen a few layouts wit jaycar gear and i gotta admit they sound pretty good. im running a yellow top optima as well and a 1.5farad fusion cap. i installed the cap cos suprisingly i wasnt gettin the full potential out of my amp. (alpine mono block) now i got no worries. and off that are 2x 12in type R subs. personally u dont need any more than 2 subs or it will over power the rest of your system and sound droney. stick wit 2 subs. nice deep basket with more than 2 magnets. that is the trick to finding good subs. doesnt matter wat they are rated at, look at the overall quality of the sub. |

I've got a sealed enclosure at the moment but have been thinking of giving ported ago (ok-yes-it is mainly because I like the look ;)).
Whats the difference in quality between a properly sorted sealed box and a properly sorted ported box? |

ported is better for long held bass lines (where it just drone's on and on)its not as punchy as a sealed box so if ur into dance and stuff like that sealed is better |

if your into nigga music lol, id say go alpine 12's-mymate has a set of v12's in his boot and they are the bomb with 2 4channel amp's, 1 for speakers and the other for subs. alpine really is the way to go, and its expensive becuase you get a quality product, ive had my alpine setup, headdeck and speaker, and they have lasted 3 years without blowing a speaker or wearing out the unit...... |

Thinking of going with JL... the reason behind 3 10s was for the look of it more than anything. I wouldn't mind getting a little fancy in the boot. |
