Hey all,

Got a L2 cluster from the wreckers today for my executive, was in working condition as car had keys and battery, and was low km's. Put it in this arvo and large amounts of smoke immeadiately started coming from the back of the cluster, i obviously disconnected the battery straight away. I put my original cluster back in and reconnected the battery. To my suprise smoke started pouring out from the back of the cluster again. I checked for any frayed wires or random metal chunks that may have been causing a short circuit but didn't find anything. What the hell could be causing this to happen with BOTH clusters? The L2 cluster was from a vn. It has me extremely frustrated (beer, beer, beer...)

The strangest part of this is that the smoke came out of your original cluster when you put that back in. That would suggest that there's some damage to the wiring loom as opposed to the cluster(s).

Pull the connectors out of the dash, and inspect them for any damage. Because something in there is getting crazy hot.

Next, you might need to start looking at pulling the cluster apart, you should really find out where the smoke is coming from, once you know where on the board it's being made, you might be able to find a screw shorting things out, or a bit of melted wire touching something it shouldn't...

Pull the cluster apart and see what you can see.

I pulled both clusters apart today, completely dsmantled them. Couldn't see one thing wrong with them, nor anything burnt. I also pulled the 3 plugs out, completely inspected them and as much wiring as possible. Once again no evidence of any of it been burnt. I'm really getting confused now. I have no idea what else it could be???

The wreckers wanted $65 for one with a working odometer/trip meter. Seems to be the average price. I got mine for $25 because the odometer/trip meter wasn't working. I fixed it when i got it home

Anyone got any ideas on this? I'm still driving around without a closter in my car. I can't figure it out...
