Hi im back. and got my insurance pay out which is $2100. now these days ive been looking around for cars which i finaly found a mint vp commodore not somthing i was think ing i would be buying. but its all origanal from 1 owner so i liked it. its white and a 92 model with 9months reg i picked it up for $1600 which i thought is a bargain. so the car is stock now. nothing done to it. but i was thinking of puting lsd diff, then lowering it then putting a cold air intake. thats the first mod ill do for the first month. but my question is how much is it for the diff. is there any way i cuold take it to the proffesionals and they can customise my standerd diff to a lsd? how much would it cost if any1 knows. cos i dont wanna buy a second hand diff and fitt it to much truoble. oh yeh can i still stay in this site for help i i own a vp now?

vp's rok as well m8...good choice .. any holden is a good choice ;) the vp's are the most similar car to the vn ..the series 2 vn engine and the series 2 vp engine are the same .. I dont think theres much difference at all between the vp and the vn as far as engine g/b and running gear goes.. ( and thats not beside the obvious b4 any of u jump on me ;) )the only thing that is different is the panel work as far as I know! as far as your diff goes I'm not a 100% sure but a mini spool! there are a few ways to tell if your car has a lsd ..
1. light the old girl up (but I dont recomend this 1) 2.there are engine numbers on board that u can ring through to your local holden dealership, and they can most of the time give you the full car history!! 3.the lsd diffs have a part number all of there own ( as all parts do ) I dont know this number but there are a few members who do !! and 2 be honest it wouldnt be that hard 2 find out!! there is a thread on diffs some were in here and it has the lsd part no for vn-vp!! |

Sweet to answer your question on the diff, I dont think you can change your normal diff (single spinner) to an lsd diff. I have heard that you can wield the diff together but that is illegal and it would probably decrease the life of the diff aswell.
What i would do would:
Cheap way: Go to the wreckers and see if the hae an LSD diff. Might want to get the spider gears looked at tho by a diff specialist. Costly way: Go to a holden dealer and see if they have one. it will be new and all good.
Hope this helps.

thats y I said get a mini spool but not sure if ya can them 4 the vn ... amini spool acts like a CIG locker ( wich is when the centre of the diff is welded 2gether and makes both wheels lsd) but as kempo metioned it is highly illegal, unless its primaraly used 4 burnout comps ;) if ya dont want to spend money on a diff then have a look at the mini spool set ups ... like I said I'm not sure if they fit them in the vn"s... ring around and get as many prices as you can on a lsd .. and a mini spool compare the diff and that'll give you a good starting point...
I must add that any work u have done on your diff is gonna be costly, in some case u may need to go bak 2-3 times to get it setup 2 were u want it! ;) |

Yes you can get spools for VN's, in fact there's a complete rear diff assembly with a spool fitted at the wreckers up the road from my place. BUT...there are some questions about the legality of spools. Technically you can get booked for them, you get a nice yellow sticker to decorate your windscreen with, and a bit of a fine as well.
Something that no-one has mentioned in this thread is that the Holden LSD's, while fine for family cars that tootle around town and occasionally get out on the highway, don't stand up well to 'spirited' driving.
The way an LSD works is inside the diff housing there are the set of cogs that we all know and love so well, but there are also some little cones in there that work like clutches. When one wheel starts slipping it locks it down so that the wheel that does have traction can still get power to the ground. Over time these little clutches wear out and need to be adjusted/replaced. The genuine Holden LSD for the VN (and VG, VP, VR, VQ) all seemed to get 'loose' fairly quickly and needed readjusting sooner than seemed normal. They are not a bad diff, but don't stand up well to hard driving.
There are a few different aftermarket ones available that work quite well from a few different brands.
There are also self-locking diffs. These are slightly different in how they work to a standard LSD. Under normal conditions they stay open, and when under load or with a wheel slipping they lock the diff completely. These work very well, but can be dangerous and unpredictable. Imagine you're half way around a wet corner and all of a sudden the rear diff locks (having a locked diff generates massive amounts of understeer). It's a very quick way to your nearest power-pole.

first of all wat is a mini spool is that wen its welded in or wat? and mouce wen u said obout the self locking diff does that mean wen it locks thats wen the wheels dont spin at all or meaning it turns into a single spinner???? so wen its open it spins both wheels right. am i right am i am i? :) |

A mini-spool is just a diff locking device.
Having a welded diff is known on the streets as a CiG locker (CiG being one of the major gas/welding suppliers in the country).
The automatic lockers that I was talking about, leave the diff open (ie. single spinner) when you're just cruising along, slowing down or going around corners. But when you sink the boot into it or a wheel looses traction, it locks up so that both wheels turn at exactly the same speed (twin spinner) which means that power will go to the wheel with traction as well as the wheel that is spinning. The only thing I don't like about it is that they are too unpredictable for my liking. I don't want something that could lock/unlock half way around a corner...that's just fuc&ing dangerous. |

thats true mouce like going around the corner wen its wet. mini spools ilegal and do u know how much they go for $ wise or mayb its best get a fully nice legal working lsd diff. another thing having an lsd diff is it more easy for the car to loose control aound the corner cos i dont wanna go installing it and dont know wats gonna happen one day wen its rainy and i push the throttle how i normally push it (hard) and then the car will just go all side ways hitting an in comming car. |

Just like any mod to the suspension/driveline of your car, the only one who can tell you how it's going to effect the handling of the car is you. Take it easy for a little while, treat it like it's an unfamiliar car for a couple of weeks, completely re-learn it and I think you'll be pleased with it. |

truth be told ..a lsd diff will actualy be easier to control if the car slides out or gets a bit hairy... the other added bonus with a lsd is that u can actualy control the car easier in a drift thatn what u would if u had a single spinner as u callem..lol |

yeah the reson 4 that is you only have tractionon on 1 wheel and most of the time its the side that goes out ..hence say bye bye to all sense of direction and if u do a realy good job 1 side of the car ... but seems u had it all under control.. ;)

lol I've had that happen to me a coupla times.... LSD centre can cost ya $3004-400 while I've seen 2nd hand 308 LSD's (whole diff and axle) go for $800. Personally I wouldnt bother, I'd save up a couple of hundred more and go to a place like KAAZ LSD's and get a new piece suited to you and your car... whatever diff ration, number of splines etc you want... even the good 'ol Detroit Locker for drags |

David created and owns the site, but he has a whole stack of minions to do his bidding (ie. keep it friendly and running properly), that's where I come in.
He actually checks it fairly often, and steps in any now and then, but mostly it's just to have a look at how it's going and to help out if he can.
As for all the personal stuff...that's what Private messages are for. Any more of that and I'll start deleting posts. |

I own the site, and created it from the ground up. Mouce helps me to keep you lot in line (and still doing a fantastic job at it).. I own a VP and got interested in VN's (VP's) quite a few years back. This is a free site and I hope it helps a lot of people out for what they need through the experiences of others..
I am not that bad a bloke either... |
