holy ****!!! $2500 for an LS1. thats awesome i thought about doing this. but i really think there is some major work that needs to happen.
Iv also thought about putting a 20b rotary into the VN!! since the vn only weighs 1300kg's (even lighter with a 20b) it would give me v8 type torque and rotary type top end. i think a 400hp 20b would move the VN along quite
well. Since the work involved is prob similar, ok maybe a bit more work with the rotary. but it would be great!

There's going to be QUITE a lot that has to go into it.

For starters the gearbox...you'll need to find out if you've got an automatic memcal (in the computer that came with the GenIII) or if it's a manual chip. Because the gearbox was electronically controlled, you'll need to make sure that the chip knows what's going on with the gearbox. If you've got an auto in the VN already, bin it, it won't be able to cope with the GenIII, if you've got a manual in there...it MAY be able to cope with it, but I'd still be trying to find a nice 6spd to drop in there.

If you haven't already got one, you should SERIOUSLY look at getting an LSD, not sure what ratio you'll need to keep the GenIII happy.

Instrument cluster would need to be changed as well, you'd have to look at how to get a cluster from a car with a GenIII in it, into the VN dash.

The suspension will need some attention (most likely).

By law the brakes will need to be improved. To legally perform an engine transplant you need to ensure that the 'safety' systems are increased to a similar specification level (ie...if you're getting GenIII engine, then you'll need to look at getting the brakes from a car that had a GenIII in it). Same goes for suspension (kinda), as long as it's not standard "boat" VN suspension it should be okay.

Rims/tyres. Forget 14", step past 15", start thinking 17".

The fuel system will probably need an overhaul just so that it can supply the fuel well enough. It would probably be fine as it is, but looking at upgrading the pump might be a good idea.

Then there's all the strengthening work that needs to go into the body of the VN (let's face it, it's a big arse motor), so you'd need to make sure that the engine mounting points are going to be able to control it when you open the loud-pedal all the way. It's a lot of torque to try to control.

After all of that is taken into consideration, then you've got to look at insurance.

In short, I'd be selling the engine (for well more than you paid for it), and pouring the money into a supercharger for the VN that you've got. For what you can sell the GenIII for, you should be able to look at a rebuild and a supercharger. You might have to put a bit of money into it yourself, but not a lot.

If you do decide to go ahead with it, dear god, you've gotta let us know how the conversion goes. Sounds like a damn nice car, if you can be stuffed going through all of it.

mouce is an all round good guy with alot of patience and vn wisdom lol, sorry to burst your bubble but I considered going down this path and even though I would've gotten a good discount in labour (courtesy of a mate who owns a workshop) it would have cost around the $10,000 mark. that is without working the engine...stock transplant. you would need a new gearbox, $2500 stock or $4500 for a good tremec, plus custom wiring, brakes, supension, the works. Shannons do good insurance for modified cars, even better insurance if your a CAMS member (invest $60 in a Level 2 non-speed CAMS licence) and driving a modified car without insurance is suicide, it leaves you open to all kinds of liabilities and costs in the event of an accident. Realistically, sell the engine for $3500, be happy with a $1000 profit and then spend your $7500 on a VN 5 litre transplant or supercharging your 3.8litre (turbo will be a little bit out of your budget, I know cos I'm doing it lol)
