HI there - I've posted on this site b4, and its been a great help. Have a common VN problem of car stalling and totally dying when the engine is warming up. I've done the usual throttle body clean, checked fuel pump relays, cleaned the fuel pressure reg, checked fuel lines, etc etc. I reckon i now need to look at the above issue.

I was going to start with replacing the CAS (however the car doesnt die when the engine gets really hot, this seems to indicate a CAS fault?) An indication the DFI may be the culprit is that wen i unscrewed the coil pack, the DFI module underneath had a crack in the white insulaty stuff. I read somewhere else this would be enuf to render the DFI faulty - any thoughts?

If I can start with replacing the DFI that woud be easier than resorting to a major mechancial (bitch of a) job replacing the CAS. Does the DFI come with a replacement coil pack, or can it be brought seperately? PS I am in NZ with a 1989 VN, series 1 motor. Any help appreciated.

when the car stalls will it start up again straight away or does it need to cool down first??

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

Hi there - good point, I forgot to include this - I can always restart the car straight away no problem - sometimes by just letting the clutch again but usually by turning the key. From what I've read here - If the car doesnt re-start when the engine is hot - this indicates a CAS problem - is my issue more likely to be the DFI/Coil pack?

Another issue - from what i can tell its recommended to replace series 1 coil packs with series 2 - there are plenty of those available in NZ - can i simply substitute these - are the connections and mounting brackets etc the same? cheers!

If you can get hold of a complete coil pack/dfi module from a series 2 that would be the way to go. They will be a straight swap
As you said your dfi module has a crack so this would be one of the first things I would be looking into.
The early (series 1) "block" coil pack and dfi module were not very popular and were prone to failure.

not sure about VS but VN series 2 upto VR should be fine. Also not sure if they mount the same so if you can get one with mounting bracket included would be good.

Cheers - coil pack changed, no furthere stalll (yet) beta performance but engine lite still showing. My question - the mechanic said htey cant extract a fault code as the 1989 series 1 VN "doesnt keep a memory" and the fault is only present wen the car is stationary - usually no engine lite till its been on the road for a while. Is the mechanic correct? I'd really like to find out wot the problem is! Shld I take it to another mechanic to actually get a diagnosis? Cheers!

There's a "how to" in collecting error codes in the how to section of the forums. You'd need nothing more sophisticared than a paperclip and a screwdriver for the job. It's worth trying, and it won't harm the electronics in the car. It may be that you can get a straight answer at home

You guys are frickin great! Finally the Holden can talk to me - using the process I got Code 44 - (Air/fuel ratio lean. Caused when the air/fuel ratio is deemed lean for more than 20 seconds. Often caused by a faulty O2 sensor). The car usually stalls just after filling up with gas and the engine lite comes on after the engine has warmed up. Its more likely to stall completely when you're going up a hill.

I'm in NZ and apparently our Commodores were fitted with the O2 Sensor. I've cleaned the throttle body already - I gave the fuel press reg a bit of a squirt of CRC as well which helped a bit. Next step perhaps to entirely replace the press reg and perhaps fuel pump as well (the latter has never been done, the car's done about 370,000). cheers!
