Hi guys was talking to a mechanic the other day geting a quote on rebulding my engine which was $3600 , and he was telling me what they replace etc and said that they put in a piece of metal somewhere near the cam to stop it from stuffing your motor , it was apparently a mistake from the factory does anyone know what he might be talking about and should i get this done to my engine .

Hey Mate , the rear seal on the v6 is a common problem .

when fitted properly it will last for years.

not sure about a metal piece though to fix it.

might not be a common problem , sounds like yours may have had the cam Key or thrust washer not installed properly ?

if you don't mind me asking , what type of motor are ya building ?

Being a VG , its most likely a s2 motor and Holden made em all pretty tuff from factory.

Most VN's have done a fair amount of km by now and i would have thought a problem like the cam breaking would

have shown up years ago. Some one might have more info for you on aftermarket fixes for the cam.

i have not heard of any breaking before cause of bad factory design....

Thanks for hat dry vn and nah i have a series 1 engine its a 1990 model vg ute , its got the series one coil packs and the metal pipe that go's behind the engine for the coolant , and nah im not rebuilding the engine after hearing how much it would cost $3600 is a bit much for me , i think im just going to stick with a exchange engine installed for 1200 with 3 month warranty which is the cheapest i have found so far , and yeah i heard that the rear main seals are a pain on the early models , im not to sure what happend to mine but i know its sumthing in the bottom half of the engine , it makes a big tinking noise like its a bearing gone , i tryed turning the bottom crank with a adjustable spanner it will only go so far and stop and then turn it the other way and will stop at a certain point , but anyways cheers .

Well I wont tell you what it cost me to rebuild my last V6 :P
Where are you getting the exchange engine from??

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

Im geting my exchange engine from vl projects north side of brisbane , they did my mates vs commodore and did a pretty good job on his exchange engine , and nah im not spending $3600 on a rebuilt engine way to expensive for me , if i was to spend that sort of money on my ute i would put in a holden 304 v8 , and just curious how much did it cost ya VNSVLE for your rebuilt enigne lol ,

I rebuilt it myself. Had the block acid bathed, honed and final clean at a shop. Also had to get the cam journal line bored and oversized bearings put in (which they screwed up the reason it only lasted 60 km) All up I think including buying the engine it cost me about 3000 - 3500 to do pretty much all of it myself.

It made a sh1tload of difference to the motor. The sound is incredible (doesn't sound like one of those farty sixes). Very lumpy idle. I love the sound more than anything. An old guy at a Ford dealership loved it. I pulled up, and he comes up to me after i got out of the car, and he says to me "that sounds awesome. I haven't heard a car with hydraulic lifters in many many years". I was very suprised that a six could sound as good as it does!
