I've just been thinking about what i really want to do to my car engine wise and now i'm tossing up between putting in a gen3 5.7L or whether to just go with the 5L. can anyone tell me what the difference is performance wise? i know what the cheaper option would be but i'm not worried about that coz i figure if i'm going to build up a car i may as well do it how i want it without shortcuts.

A much easier and i think beneficial build would be a stroked 5 litre to either 355 (approx 5.8 litre) or if you want to go a little more 383 (approx 6.3 litres). I have heard that the 383 if not done correctly can give you alot of hassles. I am sure that there are mony more opinions out there this is just my thought on the matter. Also people seem to go for the VN 5 litre motors not sure on the exact reasoning but i know the VN had more torque than the VP variation. |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

alot easier to get a roadworthy with the 5 litre, but performance wise the 5.7 is naturally better because, 1.the 5.7 is newer and has more technology put into it(disregarding pushrods) 2.larger capacity 3.youll have the choice of the newer 4speed auto or 6 speed manual |

If you could find a donor vehicle cheap, the 5.7litre Chev is going to have far greater potential than the old Holden 5litre... its just a sad fact of life. If you don't have a donor vehicle, IMO it would just be cost prohibitive to do a conversion- fuel system, management system, full driveline etc. Obviously it would be a massive undertaking but I say go for it if you are up to it.
Personally, I feel that if you already have a 5litre, take it out to 355 and you'll be more than happy and be able to keep a little bit of money in your kicker aswell. There's some damn good off the shelf packages out there for a 355 these days and with a lot of thought and careful shopping you can make a staunch combination without destroying your bank account.
I'm a little weary of 383s primarily because of the horror stories I've heard but I haven't had any personal experience with them. It does bother me how much has to come out of the block though. Having said that, I'm a firm believer that there isn't too much you can't do with cars these days, after all, its only metal!
What about hotting up a standard displacement 5litre? You'll be on a winner for torque and it will make plenty of power but depending on how far you take it reliability and drivability may suffer compared to a stroker or 5.7... what are you prepared to live with?
Bottom line- I love the Holden 5litre and would take that before a Chev. Proudly Australian! I honestly feel that we should have kept that motor all along...I'm happy to take a bit of a power penalty to keep my true Holden motor. |

well thats what go me thinking about it. was that i've seen a few ads for "damaged" 5.7L cars for as little as 3500. now i haven't yet gone to view any of these cars but if i could get one for around 4000 i'd be pretty happy. if i had a donor car would it make it a lot more practical? |

Absolutely- provided the donor car only has cosmetic exterior damage. If theres other problems you'd have to review on a case by case basis. Basically, having a donor means that you have EVERYTHING to make it work and you'd just have to install the new parts into the VN. I'd assume some modifications would be required to make it work all work but you'd need to speak to someone who has done it before.
If you could get a good donor for $3500 - $4000 and do the spanner swinging yourself it would be an awesome deal. |

I know of guys on justcommodores who have done the change. Not sure if anyone here has done it but when you start it you should make a thread- it'd make for interesting reading. |
