My son has a VN Commodore that he is trying to install a steering wheel onto. When it was bought the steering wheel was crooked, so he managed to get the wheel off, but now cant put it back on. The centre bolt seems to be too short now. Any ideas on what he is doing wrong?

Is it an aftermarket wheel? If so- are you sure you have the correct boss kit?

If it is a factory item (VN / VP)- there has been no change to anything else so the center bolt should still be all good.

He has both, the factory fitted steering wheel, and when that didnt work he bought a new boss kit and wheel. Neither will go on.

Sounds like the spline may be buggered on the steering column seeing as though the steering wheel was crooked when you got the car. Have a look at the spline and make sure all of the teeth on the spline are straight and unobstructed.

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

another thing is make sure he didnt hit the bolt straight on!! The steering colums is colapsable, so there for if he has hit it, it is quite possible that it has colapsed!! If this is the case the whole colum will need to be replaced!

P.S welcome to the club!!

if your not sliding the wheel completely over the shaft check for dents in the thread of the column

if they can can drive the car safely then id doubt the steering is collapsed. im guessing that your refering to where the column bolts up to the body and that the bolts may of come off or snapped?

Cheers,
Nodg.

You can upload photo's into your replies nodg. All you need is a photobucket account and also use the Reply to topic button instead of the quick reply box.

Pretty sure you can use the tags- but we're off topic.

I'd love to hear what the problem was...
