i was drivin round with some mates tha other day when my vn started to make a really loud clicking noise under tha bonnet i suspect tha harmonic balancer is stuffed is there anyway of knowing if its tha harmonic balancer or something else also if i'm sitting at tha lights it starts to idle really rough and heat up and suggestions
lots of help would be greatly appreciated thanx

does it click insync with the revving of the engine? if it does it might be your oil pump. a mate of mine had this happen, expensive to fix. he just brought a new engine, much cheaper.

^^^oil pumps aren't that hard/expensive to change yourself. They take a bit of time, but they aren't THAT bad!

Loud ticking...injectors, lifters, valve-springs, exhaust manifold gasket, harmonic balancer...those are the ones that spring to mind straight away. After that then ANY of the pulleys on the front of the engine, timing chain tensioner...

Since it's heating up, I'd suggest having a look at the water pump too.

Is it louder on one side of the engine than the other, and as Nijell asked, does it get faster and slower with engine speed?
