Pretty sure mechanical guages run a tube- not a wire? The wire could be the sender for the guage.
The reason mechanical guages are illegal is because they pump the hot fluid right up to the guage- often into the interior if install in such a way- and if the line ruptures you can score yourself some nasty burns or a fire. Pretty sure thats the story anyway- don't quote me on it! |

hey thanx well im now not too sure if it is a mechancial gauge then because its got a metal tip on it that is meant to go in a hole somewhere in the engine and im pretty sure it reads how hot that is and then sends it up to the gauge??? is this sort of gauge alright?? as in legal? |

If the only things that connect to the back of the gauge are WIRES then you're fine. If you've got a hose of sorts then it's time to put the gauge on e-bay and go and buy yourself an electrical gauge.
@MILD50, you're bang on with the reason they are illegal. In the event of an accident, mechanical gauges can rupture and spew boiling water or really freaking hot oil all over you and or hot parts ot the engine. Creating a massive burns/fire hazzard. As I mentioned in the how-to for gauge installation, the only mechanical gauges that are legal for street use are vacuum gauges or boost gauges. |

YES you should be able to get a t-piece. I'm not sure where from, or the part number, but it will be out there somewhere. VDO have a good range of fittings for car gauge senders, as do Autometer and Speco. Check out their catalogues online.
Failing that...you could even try your local plumbing supply shop, they MIGHT be able to track something down for you, it might take a while, but it's an option. Just make sure they know that it's got to be able to withstand temperatures up to 150degC and fairly high pressure too. |
