hey guys.. my manual vn ss wont let me go from 3rd to 2nd.. every other gear is fine.. gearing up is also fine.. the clutch is on its way could it be clutch related? or could it be no oil in the clutch master cylinder? i don't know ho to check the master cylinder. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I'm thinking that the synchro is probably well worn, might be time to get it serviced (the box that is).

I'm not so well versed on the V8, but in the V6 the clutch is cable operated, so I've got NO idea about the clutch master cylinder.

Try double-clutching it to second, if that works then you can bet your arse that the synchro is shot.

Reverse always grinds a bit in the manuals simply for the fact that it's a square cut gear, not helical cut. Using either 3rd or 5th will stop it grinding into reverse. Hate to say it, but...that's normal VN behaviour. The manuals may not have been smooth boxes, but they are strong as hell.

As for getting it from 4th to 3rd...could be something jamming the selector and not letting you get through. Could also be that you're trying to rush the shift. I know that if I try to go for a lightning shift from 3rd to 2nd, it might hang up on something, but if I take pressure off the lever and then re-try it will slot straight in.

If your gear box ever does something funny, i would say unless your an expert or at least know a hell of alot about then, stop, put it on a trailer and take it to an expert. I think things like that are to dangerous to do yourself and risk f#$%ing up with you knowing you have, could let go instantly, could let go going 110km/h.
just my thoughts
