HELLO well yesterday i was going to dandenong plaza and wen and parked in the underground car park to go in coles to get a smoke cuoldnt find no god damn parking spot so i thought i would just park in the disabled spot for like a minute while i run and get som smokes. anyways as i come out i go into my car press the breaks like i normally do to start the car once i have pressed the breaks all of a sudden it went straight to the ground this is wen i got scared luckily my hand break is good so i started the car wait till theres no cars behind me and put it in reverse while pressing the breaks to c if it doesnt work obviosly it didnt so i got scared and pulled the hand break slightly to stop then oved it back up aain with the handbreak. i got out the car checked my brake fluid it seemed ok. so then i thought mayb som1 got angry at me for parking in the disbles and cut my break line which isnt easy to cut inpossible actually specially being in a shopping centre with no tools to cut it. so anyways i bent over and had a look under my car everywhere even where the break bleader is to check for leaks didnt c no leak but then wen i got to the middle part of the car on the passangger side i saw a big pile of fluid wich wasnt sure if it was break fluid so got my hand smudged on it and smelt it didnt smeel or feel like it so this is wen i was cerious and mad not know ing wat it was my break resivior was just abit below max so i went in kmart and got break fluid poured abit in and (my break fluid very dark) went in the car and started to pump the breaks to c if it gets harder still no good so i started the car up and pushed the breaks and put it on D all a sudden its holding the car abit but still goes to the ground so then i decided to slowly but risky drive home with 1 hand on the hand brake just in case. wen i got home i pulled my tyres out and checked the breaks to my shock it was thin as thin not to bare metal but pretty thin. checked the back and there pretty thin aswell so i thought ah ok i need new break pads but im cerious y is the back thin as the front? (dam carsales guy LIER) anyways got mums car went got break pads got home and installed them all by myself hehe! (proud of myself) after all that done i decided to blead the breaks which i learnt awhile bak from som1 telling me. called my mum out to press the breaks while i bleaded it i started on the passenger side first then drivers side then L/R then R/R the way i bleaded it was pump bout 3 times hold open bleader goes to foot then pump bout 3 times slowwwly and so on same thing all over again. ok so ive done all that now but it seems not to be as hard as i want it to b and for som reason now the r/h rear brakes r squeeking. WHY? anyways hope som1 will reply to this and sorry for the long looonng post. b4dn xxxx

I'm not sure if this is how you bled the brake system, but here's how it should be done:

1) Get an assitant to sit in the drivers seat with their foot pressing on the brake pedal
2) Loosen the bleed nipple a quarter of a turn
3) When the brake pedal hits the ground, and BEFORE they take their foot off the pedal, tighten up the bleed nipple
4) Once the nipple is tightened, raise the pedal and re-apply pressure.
5) Complete steps 2-4 until clean brake fluid comes out.

It's important to keep an eye on the level in the resevior, as it will drop fairly quickly.

The brakes should be bled in the following order,
Rear Passenger
Rear Driver
Front Passenger
Front Driver.

Wait until clean new brake fluid comes out of each one before moving onto the next. And only use new brake fluid from a previously unopened container.

As for why your brakes could have died all of a sudden, it could be that your master cylinder has crapped itself, that could do it. It could be that there was a small air bubble in the system, a full system bleed will fix that up.

The rear brake that squeaks, did you bed the pads in properly or did you just jump in and drive like normal? If you just jumped in and drove as you usually would, there's a fair chance that you've glazed the pad(s). If that's happened, it depends on how severe it is, if it's just a minor glaze, it should return to normal over a few weeks, if you've baked hell out of it, those pads a) won't work as effectivly as they should, and b) will squeal for their entire lives.

The correct way to bed in new brake pads is

1) Get up to a speed between 50 and 60kph and gently apply the brakes
2) Slow down to less than 20kph WITHOUT coming to a complete stop
3) Drive for no less than 400m at 50kph.
4) Repeat 1-3 five to ten times.

This quite nicely machines the face of the pads to match that of the rotors, gets the pads settled in to their new home and temperature cycles them a few times which helps prevent glazing.

A lot of it also comes down to which pads you got. The first set of pads I ever put in my car were the cheapest ones that Repco stocked, I replaced them less than 12 months later with the top of the line Bendix ones. I've never looked back. Brakes are one of the most important safety features of your car, it makes sense to find the extra cash to get damn good ones. Sure, cheap pads will stop your car, but they tend to wear quicker (and therefore make more mess), make more noise (because they aren't as well build) and don't work quite as nicely as the good quality ones.

If you've got a manual, you use the gears to slow down as much as possible without touching the brakes. You just need to plan where you go driving when you do that first trip.

Being able to take sharp corners at 30kph is kinda important.

One way I normally cheat is to do the first brake then only speed up to 25 or 30kph, that way if I need to slow down using the gears it's a bit easier.
