Take the signal from the tacho wire in the dash, much easier. Pull the cluster out and find the brown wire with the red stripe (it's in there somewhere).
I know that it's there, it has to be there. You might have to pull out the connectors that the cluster slots into, because it will be on the back of that.
It does not matter which level instrument cluster you've got, the tacho signal wire will be there. Even in the cars with L1 clusters (temp, speed, fuel) the tacho wire is there, which means that you can yank the L1 cluster and drop in an L2 cluster.
Sometimes it's cable tied right up and out of the way, so you might have to do a bit of digging for it, but it's going to be in there.
The other possibility is that you have blown the fuse to the ciggy socket. Make sure that it's behaving properly and that the gauge is actually getting power. Maybe even a dead gauge? Try it in another car and see what happens.
Either way...welcome to the club, hope you stick around for a while. More to the point, I pray to god that you're not putting this tacho in a stock auto. |

Hey i just did this mod the other day like mouce said pull out the cluster, now on the left hand side there is a series of wires behind a red(think) clip. use a screw driver and pull this out now there are about 8 wires there. Now wire the green wire to the brown with red stripe wire, the red to the pink with black stripe, the black wire to the to the bottem black wire, and the yellow to the brown wire with the white stripe. btw there are two of these so i thgink either1 is ok. this will wire up the whole tacho to the same spot, i found it much easier and neater, the only thing is you will have to drill a hole so the wires can all fit through.
Hope this helps |

The primary function of a tacho is to show you the engine speed so that you know when to shift gears. Unless you're a tool who drives a stock auto and manually shifts it there's no reason to have a tacho in there (unless you race it on a track). Putting one in a stock auto is almost as usefull as fluffy dice and fake 'turbo' stickers. It's good for an extra 5rwkw, but only in your mind.
The ticking noise up near your rocker covers could be one of two things, one, it could be slightly noisy hydraulic lifters, which really isn't a problem at all. Or it could be just the normal noise your injectors make. Just by how they work, injectors tick when they are working. With the engine running, open the bonnet, and touch one of the injectors, you should feel it ticking regularly.
The crunching noise is a bit more of a mystery. Do you have the V6 or the V8? If it's the six, try to work out if it's coming from the top or bottom of the engine (either that or left or right side would be helpfull too) |

Check out any wreckers for L2 clusters, there's a few people on here wrecking VN's, see if there are any L2 clusters around here you can have for cheap. Personally I wouldn't pay any more than $50-$70 for it. Anything more than $100 and you're getting screwed badly.
As for the noise, take off the engine drive belt (place a spanner on the nut in the middle of the belt tensioner arm and loosen the belt), then spin each of the pulleys by hand (except the big one down the bottom, you aren't going to be able to turn that by hand). You'll probably find that one of them is crunching a bit. Replace it and you should be okay. |

hi I have been trying to put a tacho in my sons vn I have tested the tach on my 350 and it worked fine but after wiring it up as specified on this post it is not working. I ran the engine and put a multimeter on the brown/red wire and there is only .02 of a volt reading. does anyone know what the voltage should be for the tach wire? Cheers Rick |
