hey guys. i have a 89 wagon totaly stocko wit a auto. my dad asked some mechanic about servicing the box. but the mechenic told him that it had never been opened before and to just drive it till it brakes and get an other one. there is nothing wrong wit it, we were just inquiring about whether we should service it or not. is this the right thing to do?

I have also been thinking about getting a shift kit fitted. can any one tell me what a shift kit consists of exactly. and do u think that it would put much more stress on the drive line having such a more firmer shift etc.

If you've got a box that's run since 1989 and has never been serviced, I'd find another mechanic. Personally I reckon that he is pulling your leg. Go to a proper automatic transmission specialist.

If you don't know when it was last done, you should AT LEAST get the fluid changed and the kick-down cable reset. If it's behaving itself properly then I can't see any harm in fitting a shift kit. A stage 1 or stage 2 shift kit should be okay, the stage one will just make the gear changes a little more 'brisk', the stage 2 may/may-not thump into gears a bit. For a daily driver that is completely stock and will stay that way get a Stage 1. If you plan on doing some engine work and you want to have a bit of fun, then a stage 2 would be the way to go.

What the shift kit contains depend on the 'stage' you go for, there are generally three stages:

Stage 1: Increases the fluid pressure slightly so that the gear changes happen a bit faster, it's normally got different valves that get put in (I think).
Stage 2: Increases the fluid pressure again, and normally an upgraded servo goes in as well. A popular choice is the corvette servo, really makes it kick into gear.
Stage 3: This is normally a fully manualised box, that is mated to a ratchet shifter, great for drag cars, but fairly lousy for a daily driver.

Sorry if I got any of that wrong, being a manual driver, I'm a bit hazy on the auto side of things, but that's the basics.

That said, you can normally do a manual conversion for about $1200-$1500 I think. There's a few people here who have done the conversions themselves. If you're a 'serious' driver, it's a hell of a lot nicer than the auto.

Maybe the mechanic thought that he would be picked to replace the tranny when it goes, much more $$ for him than a service.

If you're handy with the spanners it shouldn't take you more than a weekend to do a swap to a manual. I've never done it myself, but from what I know of it, the worst part is setting up the clutch and pedal.

Of course you've got to make sure you get the right flywheel for your engine, and bell-housing.

i think i'll stik wit the auto and throw in a service and stage one shift kit. cause it'll be a daily driver with not many mods. can't afford to mod anything seriously at moment.
