my bro has them on his Vs, but i was wondering if any other models fit the Vn for extractors? how much, what do they do

VP is a definite match, VR maybe. VS onwards, they use different heads, so I'm very unsure as to whether thay fit. If you go to the trouble of fitting extractors, change the rest of the exhaust when you can. It's also a good time to check the catalytic converter. It's a required piece of emissions equipment on the exhaust, which fits where the pipes from the exhaust manifolds join together. Inside them is a honeycomb arrangement. They trap various pollutants, and over time they get clogged. If your engine seems to be down on power, but runs fine, this is usually the cause.When the exhaust comes off, shine a torch through it. If you're having trouble seeing any light through the other end, it should be replaced

hmm yeah Vn and Vp are the same but its hard getting my hands on some. i just put in a brand new catalytic converter. just gonna snoop around the commy wrecks for a while to see if they have any.

Extractors serve one main purpose; to reduce the resistance in the exhaust system, thereby increasing power output. They have secondary effects of increasing fuel economy and lowering the operating temperature of the engine a little.

I'd say shop around as much as possible. Check everything like the Trading post, free ads papers and so on. Bribe your dad to help you to go and look for them.

To fit the extractors yourself, it's a fairly simple Meccano set; the only important thing to remember, is if any exhaust nut/bolt seems tight, spray it with WD-40 or something similar, let it sit for 10 minutes and have another go. The last thing you need is to break a manifold stud in the heads.

Extractors use a different gasket to regular manifolds, and you can readily buy them anywhere; Super Cheap Auto, Autobarn and the like often just have them lying around.

When you get secondhand extractors, make sure the flange where it bolts to the head is straight; the plate from the front pipe to the rear pipe should be as close to dead flat as possible. If it isn't there will be issues with leaks. Not sure how you straighten them, but an exhaust fitter may know. Some of them are funny about fitting secondhand extractors.

Finally, coat each manifold stud with anti-seize, and both sides of the extractor gasket with manifold sealer. A former boss of mine used to use a product called Maniseal on exhausts he fitted. When the time came to change something he fitted, all the nuts came off easily, and with a tap of a hammer, the manifold/exhaust flange/pipe would separate without the usual battle.

A new set of Genie headers for a VN is about $650-$700. Cut that at least in half, and maybe even two thirds for cheaper brand headers. Genie quote a power increase of up to 26% on some models over stock, on a VN, I think it would be closer to 15-17%. If you can upgrade your muffler and resonator for something more freeflow, it's worth doing if you can afford it. Standard VN exhaust is 2 and a quarter inch diameter, fed through a largish muffler and a resonator. You'd have to ask your dad's mate the difference between street legal and "oh crap, I've got a canary!"

Just be careful of how loud it is. Extractors will make the exhaust not louder and angrier. You do have some leeway, but cops can use it as an excuse to sticker your car.

The 1991 design rule on engine noise is written like this:
"The maximum volume, driving by at 60km/h is 96 decibels." In other words, if you drive normally at 60km/h it can't be any louder. To put it into perspective, consider this. A normal conversation is about 25-30 decibels. A car alarm is 100-110 decibels. The design rule came in for the VP, but it should be a good guide

Should sound good. I have no idea how much difference it makes, but some people whom take their exhausts very seriously put in what's sometimes called a balance tube; a pipe that links the two sides of the exhaust together somewhere near the gearbox under the car. Last car I heard with my own ears with this kind of exhaust system was an XD Falcon with a mildly worked 351, and it sounded really good.

Remember to lift up the back seat and around the edges of the front seats; you never know what you might find, especially under tha back seat.

Many years ago, a friend of mine bought an HJ Kingswood sedan for $1200. As soon as he got home, he thoroughly cleaned it, taking the trouble to lift the back seat as well. He found a ladies' Rolex watch. When he took it to a jeweller, and the jeweller told him it was worth about $2500.

I bought my HZ Kingswood 10 years ago. It has stood by me through good times and bad all this time. I got it from a car yard I worked for, for $300. Took it home, and under the back seat was $15 in change, a condom still in the wrapper, and about 2 dozen beer bottle tops. In the boot I found about half a dozen stray 1/4 inch drive sockets.
